WHAT IS YKSITTÄISTAPAUS?

Yksittäistapaus short films are a film sensation created collectively by fifteen filmmakers, artists, researchers and social influencers. Yksittäistapaus is a collection of short films, a feature film titled Force of Habit and a campaign linked to them, that reveal the hidden way power is exercised on women in both private life and in society. The short films are fiction but the scripts are derived from the writers’ own observations from real life. The films depict everyday moments that we have learnt to see as normal but that prove to be absurd under closer examination.

OBJECTIVES

The objective of the influencing and impact work is use the films in order to provide insights and observations of gendered power dynamics and offer tools for processing and verbalising it as well as for defining a new normal.

PARTNERS

The impact work partners include the Finnish National Agency for Education, the Ombudsman for Equality, the Loisto Settlement NGO: Helsinki Girls’ House and Boys’ House that have participated in developing the discussion materials. The Timeout Dialogue for contructive discussion has been was provided by The Timeout Foundation. Yle is the project’s media partner. Yksittäistapaus is also included in the Education and Raising Awareness in Schools to Prevent and Encounter Gender-Based Violence ERASE GBV project funded by the EU. In the project, the aim is to study and develop the professional preparedness of education professionals in recognizing and encountering children and youth exposed to gender-based violence, abuse and harassment.

HOW TO USE THE FILMS

The films and the related discussion materials can be used by working communities, universities, schools and other organisations as well as for independent studying.

We encourage everyone to watch the Yksittäistapaus films and get to know the method of constructive dialogue. The discussion method works best in small groups with a maximum of approximately ten people. For educational purposes, larger discussions can also be organised, if necessary. In this context, educational purposes refer to pre-primary and primary education, general upper secondary education and free-of-charge education leading to a vocational upper secondary qualification. No fees can be collected from participants for using the dialogue method and screening the Yksittäistapaus films without the permission of Tuffi Films Oy.

If you wish to organise a Yksittäistapaus screening for more than 20 people at your workplace, for instance, and your operations are not included in the above-mentioned educational purposes, please contact the production company Tuffi Films.

The Yksittäistapaus film series can be ordered for a cinema, for instance, for a fee.

BACKGROUND

Yksittäistapaus was put into motion in late spring 2016, before the #MeToo movement. Film production company Tuffi Films’ founders Elli Toivoniemi and Kirsikka Saari called together a group of film industry professionals, artists, researchers and social influencers to make short films of their own observations. The purpose was for the films to give a physical form for “that thing”, the incidents that were regarded as a one-off but that were, in reality, caused by power structures and our unconscious operating models.

Of the eleven stories of Yksittäistapaus, six were used as the basis for the feature film Force of Habit.

The screenwriters and/or directors of the films included (in alphabetical order) Reetta Aalto, Maryan Abdulkarim, Tine Alavi, Alli Haapasalo, Ulla Heikkilä, Sonya Lindfors, Inari Niemi, Raisa Omaheimo, Anna Paavilainen, Kirsikka Saari, Aino Suni, Saara Särmä, Miia Tervo, Elli Toivoniemi and Jenni Toivoniemi.
